It’s all about Suspender Belts this week as our Harlow Suspender Belt was voted best vintage Garter Belt in The Daily Mail this week. It made an interesting read, not only because The Daily Mail is a traditional middle class English newspaper yet included a line about Suspender Belts usually being reserved for first dates only. Racy !
Anyway, it prompted me to do a little guide:
For some reason the product picture of Sophia St Villier wearing our CC09 French Knickers / Tap Panties never made it up to our website! Never mind, better late than never.
French Knickers were a bit of a bugbear for me as most vintage Tap Panties from the 1940s had a non stretch waistband, meaning they wouldn’t fit everyone. A couple of experiments followed, with French Knickers featuring a half elasticated waistband and although nobody said anything, they weren’t as good as I intended.
In 2009 I decided it was time to go back to the drawing board. Forget practicality and go for beauty! Our CC09 French Knickers are adapted from a 1940s CC41 pair of tap panties (CC41 = utility mark used on British clothing during WWII) with original features such as no elastic (nearly impossible to find in the ’40s) and cute pearlised buttons at the side to close. They’re made from the softest satin in black and light peach.
Surprisingly, we have very few issues with fit in these - it turns out I was worrying over nothing!
By the way, if you do pick up pair of our CC09 French Knickers be sure to check the label inside which has it’s own CC41 inspired logo.
The Daily Mail have said that our Harlow 6 Strap Suspender Belt is the Best Vintage Suspender Belt. Well, if it’s the Daily Mail it must be true. After all, if our Harlow Belt is good enough for Nicole Kidman…
We’re about to celebrate our 15th birthday and were wondering if you’d like to get involved?
For the last few years illustrator Charlotte Thomson has designed the artwork to go on our shopping bags (examples below) which have become very collectible and which have been spotted in exotic locations worldwide! We’re looking for a new design to celebrate our 15th birthday and which will be used throughout 2015 for shop purchases.
Design a new bag competition.
Last weekend Richard (Mr What Katie Did) was invited to Finland as part of the judging panel for Pinup Finland. The competition is run by Pinup Garage, one of the leading pin up stores in Finland who famously gained backing from the Finnish version of Dragon’s Den (Shark Tank as it’s known in the US) a couple of years ago. Pinup Garage carries all the big names in pin up fashion, as well as their own label dresses, and What Katie Did - which is why we were invited. It was our first time in Finland, and it was great to see such a thriving vintage and retro scene.
All lingerie by What Katie Did, available at Pinup Garage Finland.
