What Katie Did Lingerie

Founded in 1999 What Katie Did specialise in lingerie and corsetry inspired by silver screen sirens of the '40s and '50s.
Their collections can be purchased at www.whatkatiedid.com, or in their stores based in London UK and Hollywood USA.

At time of writing it’s 8am and I’ve far more important (boring) things to do than show you some new lingerie - but I’m so excited about it I have to let you know!

We’re revamping our sheer Cabaret range and making it saucier than ever! There are two styles of bra, a bullet and underwired, both of which feature vintage style stitching on the cups and both of which are half sheer organza, half satin. For the panties we’ver got a deep retro cut and a ’40s French knicker taken from a British wartime CC41 pattern. Both knickers feature sheer front panels with a risque art deco motif placed strategically…

The motif actually has an interesting story behind it. A few months ago someone posted on our fb page a link to a pair of vintage sheer French knickers on Etsy which had a figleaf on the crotch. They were about $100 and I didn’t really have the money at the time, although they were super cute.

In October I was wondering around Portobello Market in London on a Friday (the ‘vintage’ day) only to see the Etsy knickers on a stand. They were still super cute but the stall-holder wanted £50 for them. Hmmmm. She actually ran after me and said that she’d paid $100 for them in the USA so it was a good buy - I must have been the only person in the world who knew that!

I went back to our boutique and asked Vicky (our store manager) what she thought and she quickly gave me £50 from the till. Over the next few days I showed the knickers to everyone - and everyone loved them. However, I wasn’t sure about recreating a figleaf as it didn’t fit with the rest of our image. The obvious choice was a heart - but again, it didn’t really feel WKD, had already been done and was a bit too ‘cutesy’ for us. We finally decided to go with our love of Art Deco and Candice in our design department swiftly came up with an motif that looks great (but as our factory found out, is a pain to sew - hopefully it’ll keep the copycats away…)

So there you go - that’s a little background into the design process at WKD. If a piece of lingerie follows us 6,000 miles around the globe then it’s a sign we have to do something with it!

We’re not waiting for our official SS12 launch date of 1st March for this one - as soon as it arrives it will be released - hopefully well before Valentine’s Day.
